This has worked for plenty of people in this thread so I suggest you read it completely, however be aware that your millage may vary, perhaps you will gain something perhaps not, but you will never lose

Everybody has experienced how FPS are going down the drain recently with TF2, however I believe I've found one of the sources (I'm pretty sure there many others) and found a way to fix it, so enough with the rambling I'm going straight to the point:

The folder:

Code:
C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\statsContains a file called:
Code:
UserGameStats_####_#### (# = some numbers)This file keeps records of god knows what about TF2, and it gets updated EXTREMELY frequently while playing.

The problem is that, most of us run high quality Anti-virus programs and they tend to scan all files that get updated in the system, and a lot of them tend to do so the instant it happens, clogging up the processor and making our FPSs die.

Apparently, having a multicore processor and fast hard drives (or a RAID 0 config) makes this even worse.

HOW TO FIX Video (credits to MafiaGuy7)
■Open up your Anti-virus program
■Go to the settings menu
■Select Exceptions/Exclusions
■Add the following folder to the scan exceptions
Code:
C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\statsReboot if your Anti-virus needs to and enjoy a smooth game of TF2

How to fix, Visually (pictures are easy):
■Microsoft Security Essentials
■avast!
■Avira
■Nod32
■Trend Micro
■Bullguard Antivirus
■Norton
■AVG (scroll down)
■Bit Defender
■Kaspersky

NOTE: User who have performed this action have been reporting frame-rate gains or stability in other STEAM games, while it seems very plausible I have not tested it myself.

Go now! do it! (rep welcome :P)

(instructions) We've just added a change that reduces the amount of data that's periodically written to disk in that folder while you're in game by about 99%. For TF2 specifically this should reduce any hitches seen when achievements are earned.

Im gonna try this, yesterday after updating my video drivers, my game was running choppy but according to the netgraph it was running a solid 59 frames. I fixed it by turning off vsnyc which allows my game to run above 200 with some tearing though, which can be annoying when you have your mouse sensitivity as high as mine. Hopefully now I can turn vsync back on.

Good find :)

I've noticed that ctf/koth sawmill has gotten extremely choppy for me lately where as it used to be fine... maybe this is why

I don't use antivirus software in real-time. I used to never have it at all, just need to know what your doing. I only open it when I might be suspicious of something.

You can just disabled while your playing a game, or just add steam to your whole exception list.

I tried this and it didnt help :(, so I've been playing with vsync off and its not as bad as I thought.

I run without vsync and have tried all kinds of stuff lately...

No idea WHAT they frakked, but right now my results of toying with settings and what not have been:

- AA 8x & AF 16x delivers 30fps low in high battles
- AA OFF & AF Trilinear delivers 22fps max.. ever...

Serious.. WHAT did they frak up? You're gonna tell me a HD 5770 can't run this game and my previous HD 2900XT can unless I go to such high settings that something stops bugging?

btw, thnx for the post but did nothing for me :S

also people with lower end computers that are 64 bit have noticed adding -32bit in the launch options as well to help.
