Recently installed my G35 USB Headset & seems to be working great. However, some games require Windows to select the microphone to use. The deafault is set to the mic/headset channel plugs & I need to select USB in my audio settings...

I go to the "Recording Devices" pane (Windows 7 64 bit). It freezes for a few seconds & pops up with "Windows Shell Common Dll has stopped working"

So I restored back to the earliest time I could find - same issue (even w/o installing G35 drivers).

Popped in Windows 7 & told it to repair system...comes up with some same error everytime :(

Any other bright ideas? I really dont want to reinstall the OS

I can get it working with Skype, Vent, etc. but because (im pretty sure) Valve games just request the mic info from Windows (from that Recording pane) it'd not workin :\

Do you not have any sound card software installed to try and change it in there?

is it USB mic or is it the port mic?? Cuz if its USB u will have a million problems to figure out the settings, it took me about 6 different options to make it work. I use the Logitech PS2 USB microphone, which u have to adjust the settings for it to read differently cuz its USB over the ported microphone right into ur Sound Card or Motherboard, if it us USB let me know and ill send ya the Windows 7 options u have to chose to get it to work

@cosmic: it is a USB mic, yes. I dont know if changing windows 7 options will work :\ its still worth a shot

@ stew: I dont have an external sound card, though it looks like my MB came with 7.1 surround sound support. IDT audio? v1.0.5511.0. though on my device manager it still lists it as Sigma tel Audio under device manager

Start -> type 'change sound card settings' -> go into it -> click 'recordings' tab

Can you see/select your USB device as default?

Are you sure it installed properly? It sounds like a problem with the stack otherwise.

"change sound card settings" is just a shortcut to the same window. For those who like pictures, here's the result:

I System restored back before I ever installed anything with the G35. The same result came about

the most important thing u need to have Recorder Set to ur Microphone as the default sound, and the other one is for where u want ur sound to come out of, i like mine coming out of my speakers

I cant, because clicking on the Recording Pane results in that popup - even right clicking or anything

From what I've gathered after about 2 minutes with google, it seems that Windows 7 has developed a reputation for having this error accompanied with recognition problems of USB headsets.

So you can't redownload your drivers and run the uninstaller on any sound drivers you have installed?

Do you have speakers you use with onboard sound? Or just the USB headset?

If you don't put your onboard audio to use, I would disable audio in the BIOS. Your mic then may can be detected by steam in the voice settings.

If you use your onboard sound (even if you don't, also) you can probably find some audio drivers bundled in with your chipset drivers, or find the site that would host that audio chipset's drivers.

I do use speakers with my onboard audio. MAYBE disabling or playing with my BIOs would help.

Zero Hour helped me find the drivers [age for my Intel motherboard (DP35DP)...but there aren't any audio drivers. The closest we could find is a link to a chipset driver which "updated" but had no effect on my audio :( ( because the audio is dependent on the OS :( )
