is TF2 crashing for anyone else whenever the |EX| server goes to a new map? like right as you enter the server, and you're waiting at the motd screen where you would hit okay and then be able to select which team you want to be on only to have TF2 freeze and crash on you? I've looked up some ways to prevent it from happening (create/modify motd_temp.html file in tf2 folder to be an empty file and setting it to read only) but I don't want to have to go find a way to fix it if it's only something that happens in the |EX| servers. is there something wrong with the MOTD for the |EX| server or does it work for everyone else?

**haven't gotten the error in any other server, mainly because I only play in |EX| :D

I just installed Win 7 and my game crashes on map changes too. HL2.exe is not responding. I never had a issue when I was on Win XP. I disabled html MOTD in the options menu and that seems to help but I still get crashes once in a while.
Could be something to do with the update? I remember reading something on Steam Forums and people complaining that TF2 was crashing a lot.

well I never had the issue because of win7. I've been using windows 7 since early march and never has TF2 (HL2.exe) crashed on me. so win7 isn't doing it for me (maybe for you kap). It started happening to me like .... 2 weeks ago. whenever the server changes map and I accept the motd too quick, HL2.exe crashes on me. if I wait like 1 second while at that screen then everything is okay. I also have disabled html MOTD in the options menu too but that hasn't fixed this. kinda sucks too because then I'd have to go and wait again to get back into the server since it's full alot

I have been getting the hl2.exe not responding, i think im gonna verify my files and defrag or delete blob, maybe one of those will take care of it

I haven't had any lockups, win7 64 bit here.

It probably is something with the update, I would give it some time. Our MOTD is just basic html...don't see how it could be crashing it.

Win7 64, never crash from MOTD, random game crashes, but I believe from video drivers.

I've had hl2 not responding errors for a long time now, I turned off DEP for the game and it seems to kill off a bunch of them.

Man I love acronyms :)

I figured out what MOTD is (message of the day), but I am at a loss at what DEP is (probably not department of environmental protection :))

no, i had the problem i fixed it. U need to run steam as administrator and HL2 as administrator

lol its Data Execution Prevention, microsoft calls it DEP. Basically its your OS (operating system lol) shutting down your game because it thinks it's gonna destroy your hdd (harddrive disk). :)

this wouldn't apply for me or most people because most people ARE the administrator on their computers. no reason not to be unless you have to share your computer with other people and they have their own accounts.

i am the sole user of my PC and it still asks me every time i run an EXE that is new. So dude if ur getting the error i would check it, even though you are the administrator ur not running XP anymore windows Vista and windows 7 requires you to run everything as an administrator even if you are the administrator

incorrect.
I also have had UAC disabled since I first installed Win7 so my OS automatically runs everything because I've allowed it to.
as admin, you have privileges to run everything as admin automatically, you don't need to be asked twice. the problems stems from the html_motd file because of the update that happeded last week in preparation for this recent class update. valve has already acknoledged the motd failure and will address it in a ninja update very soon. until then, keep an empty motd file in your tf2 folder as read only until the fix comes.

NEW POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS!!!!!!!!!

put this in your autoexec cfg file : mat_queue_mode 0 (may cause even more crashes since it's still a buggy command - also try with '2' instead of '0')

also try this one : (Possible) Crash at map change fix - Steam Users' Forums
* probably want to try this one first since more people have had success with it working.

I have been trying a few diff things but haven't tried these out yet. Will let you know if it works for me.

EDIT: and by the way, for the people who don't know, this is the crash you get that leaves you with the "HL2.exe has stopped working" popup right after a map change.

I've had the same problem since I got windows 7 64bit (2 months early thanks to msdna). Disabling MOTD helped lower the frequency in which this happens, but I still get a lockup from time to time.

I understand what cosmic is saying. Even though you are on the administrator account, sometimes to get certain exe's to run correctly you still have to "run as administrator." It doesn't make sense but it's true for many kinds of files I've tried to run/programs I've tried to install. One of the main ones is the installation of my sound drivers, it will give you an error every time until you right click > run as administrator.

ya this has been cooking in my BRAINS for a bit now and I realize that it is because I am the admin AND I have UAC completely disabled that I never run into some problems. so my bad cosmic, you were correct. UAC is a bitch :D

I also have UAC completely disabled on my single admin account. It really is a bish still having to "run as administrator."
