View Full Version : Red errors in console - Can't find a fix

I've been having a number of red errors in console, one of which I know is affecting my FPS - Model '(null)' doesn't have attachment 'trail' to attach particle system 'rockettrail' . I don't like the idea of all these problems, because I don't know the effects of all of them, but I would love to find a fix for this error in particular. It acts like a huge lag spike. It looks like players are teleporting around, not moving smoothly. I've been able to point to this error many times in response to the spike. This happens if I play soldier (my main) or when I'm around other soldiers. It's a huge deal breaker for 1v1 soldier battles.

I've did lots of google searching for this error and found no definite answer. One person(in a random forum somewhere) was able to fix this error by replacing his video card, which makes me think this error is not TF2 itself. I have a fairly new video card (asus ati 4870) and no intentions of replacing it soon. I have a great internet connection(10mbps down/ 1mbps up) and know its not a network problem.

So far I have:

deleted all tf2 files (in steam, then the entire steamapps\user\tf2 folder) and re-downloaded
verified game cache multiple times
changed video settings around
uninstalled the drivers for my video card and used a driver cleaner afterward before re-installing the newest drivers

None of these seem to help. I have noticed it can vary in frequency but this could be due to the current number of soldiers in game. I've looked all over for a fix and done everything to my knowledge with no luck. If anyone has fixed this problem and/or has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I am getting those errors too.

May be they are the reasons of my striking chokes.

I'll look for the solution too.

I get them all the time, and havent ever had it do anything bad. Sometimes I'll start up tf2 or any other valve game and they'll be there right away before even starting the game.

Same here, I never concerned myself with them.

I'm not too worried about the errors themselves, unless they are causing this lag spike issue I'm trying to fix. I'm beginning to belive it may not be the errors. The plot deepens. Thanks for the input everyone.

Have you changed any console commands that have to do with models or textures?
Do you use autoexec?

If this is, in fact, video card related. Try debugging with the video options & just trial/error your way through it.

Maybe multicore processing is enabled? I know its been a huge issue in L4D2, maybe it is with your setup?

Also - update your Graphics card. If you have Nvidia, click their auto-detect. If you have a radeon, well...good luck digging! :)

I think he is going for

you can't get errors if you can't play the game :)

I've been considering this. It's really frustrating when small things like this can keep you from playing your best. Nevertheless, I enjoy the game.

After the fresh install with no autoexec I was still getting the errors. In fact, I was getting lots of new ones too.

i've gotten those red errors in pretty much every Source game. haven't effected me gameplay-wise but wish I could just find the files it wants and feed it to the damn engine so it could just shut up already.

Lots of times I get a lot of red errors for no reason but I still can play the game just fine

I've played around with alot of the video options, although I can't say I've ruled each one out yet. I've tried turning off multithreaded with no luck. What do you mean by update your graphics card? I have the newest drivers, and I hope I don't have to get a brand new card to fix this.

To everyone that has errors and doesn't see any effect or wants to deal with it...that's fine. Not everyone has the hardware/ping/etc to detect these kind of things. It may not be critical for everyone, but it can be for me. I get tons of errors when I start the game, but the rockettrail error pops up over and over in game. I've been able to find it in console after a spike many times. I'm not 100% sure that this error in particular is causing all my problems, but I think it does have an effect.

I appreciate all the input guys.
