i think a bunch of us got that card, it kicks some major ass. I know stew and Zero Hour have them and i of course
It seemed like the best deal I could find. For the power you get it's a pretty good price. Definitely better value than the 5870. On top of that, I read that it's quiet and has low power requirements so I don't have to replace my power supply.

Yeah should be really good. What did you have before?
Geforce 8800 GTS
It ran games well enough but just kind of self destructed one day when I was playing l4d2

That was my upgrade 8800GTS -> 5850. This card is a monster and lives up to the hype.

I just ordered a 5850 to, this should tide me over till my next total rebuild. This 8800GTX has lasted forever and ever.
mmmm I've already talked to Sung and Stew about getting some pretty weak performance after installing it. I even put everything to low quality, lowered my resolution, and tried some of Sung's optimizations and I'm only getting about 30fps in a busy fight on badwater. If anything that's even worse than I got when my 8800GTS was working.
The only things I can think of is either my performance is being capped by my cpu [Intel(R) CORE(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz (2CPUs), ~2.1GHz], or it's an issue with my power supply (600W).

last I remembered, tf2 is a cpu based game. So it could easily be the cpu.. *shrug* D:

nein, u got a bad card. RMA it and get a new one. i got the e8400 core 2 duo 3.0ghz with the HD5850, and my shitty dell with a Pentium D 3.2ghz can run TF2 at 40FPS on max with a 9500GT, ur card is broken on arrival, or u didnt install ur drivers

NOPE!!!
Settings bro.. You didn't realize it in the past with a weak card, now you realize your settings are fucked.. Set everything to max and see how your FPS are increasing.. YES, putting shit higher will increase your performance in TF2..
Since the War update or something like that, TF2 has been fucked up and the higher your vid-card runs, the smoother it will get.. I had the same when I upgraded from a 2900XT to my 5770 and was surprised about getting LOWER fps with the card.
Sung gave me additional settings to have shit working and now my shit runs again.. The problem lies with VALVE and their fucking insane updates that NEVER work.
Now running the following settings:
All high, textures 'very high'
8x AA, 16x AF, bump on, reflect all etc.. All max on 1680x1050 gives me higher fps then lowering any of the previous settings..
Add the following cmd's to your autoconfig.cfg and it should run smooth and with high fps:
rate "50000"
cl_updaterate "101"
cl_cmdrate "66"
cl_smooth "1"
cl_smoothtime "0.01"
Those work for me and now I rarely drop under 60 fps.. the 5850 should keep at the same resolution as me around 100~+ as a minimum. Maybe tweaking your CPU a bit could work, but I found little difference between running my Q6600 @ 2.4 or 3.2..... Yes, 33% OC and little difference.. Multi vs single does make it a little smoother, but only a very little.
Valve, maybe instead of working on apple shit.. you could do some multicore work and fix the GPU problems!
That seems really odd lol... but I'll give it a shot after I get back from the dentist. Also I'm fairly positive I have the most up to date drivers from ATI's site.

Well...
I couldn't properly figure it out what causes it, but I found some funny results:
1024x768 == 10 fps at best with low settings (so no AA, AF, textures low etc..)
1680x1050 == 40 fps minimum with every setting MAXED...
That is no joke.. that is why TF2 is frakked..
After I also changed the cmd's I posted after Sung told me that was what would fix my 'fps-lag'.. My TF2 now runs smooth and I need like 32 players in the same spot to drop towards the 40.. otherwise it barely touches the 50's and usually just stays capped at 65 (fps counter says 64) as my screen can't do more so I capped it.

What Freaky is saying makes sense in the way that if your video settings are chopped to low, it will put more load on the CPU to do the processing. If you set your video settings up some, the video card will take most of that work and do it by itself, releasing the CPU from lots of strain.
Ah ok... I was telling Cosmic and Tiger that I tried it out with everything on high. I was on a 12 player arena server getting about 50 fps while fighting. I'm going to reserve judgement until I get onto a 32 man server

I bought the GTX480

Wow.. good luck on the electric bill bro...
GTX 480 runs at 450Watt under normal non OC'd load, but.. Is a mighty quick card indeed.

Grrrr...
I played this afternoon and again, despite the settings changed etc.. Whenever the game gets filled I get some weird fps lag.. sometime it drops on fps, sometime it doesn't and stays perfectly capped.. in both cases the game gets choppy.
Like I posted before, this has been since the WAR update.. WTF got changed that the game is so choppy and terrible?
I am also intrigued by this maxing of settings to actually raise your FPS...
I have an HD ATI 5770, 1 GB , I know that is an older card but was wondering if that is what I should do as well? Every game I've played for the past 10 years I just put everything on middle settings, running at native resolution.
Also, my native resolution since its a 16:9 HD monitor, is 1920 x 1080, which I'm not sure TF2 was ever designed to run in so I was wondering if thats what affects performance as well.
Note: These questions are just for playing on the spam server. When we play matches my FPS never goes under 120 (thats what I cap it at) since there only 12 or 16 people playing as opposed to 32. In the spam server, and on un-optimized maps, my FPS has dropped down to the 40's which I don't think is very acceptable... I don't have the most current machine but...
Core i7 920 (overclocked slightly, and liquid cooled to boot)
6 GBs of RAM
and you know my video card
500 gbs free hard drive space
^ pretty sure I should get stellar FPS with that hardware.....

Nope, TF2 is just fucked...
Whenever a server fills with people the game becomes a pos and anything over 24 players will simply run terrible.. I gave up on finding proper settings and run with the following 40+ fps on all situations.. Sometimes chaos manages to drop the fps, but hey.. my ping is 110~130... the fps aint the biggest concern ;)
Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz
Sapphire Vapor-X HD 5770 1GB stock
4x 1Gb HyperX 800Mhz DDR2
ASUS Rampage Formula (powerfull board, best upgrade I ever bought!)
TF2 all settings max.. all... everything enabled except vsync..
I did notice an increase when I switched mobo's which would indicate the HDD could also be a factor. i.a. Valve just fucked TF2 after the WAR update, since that update my game has never been the same again.

Did you try deleting your tf directory? Some people have reported that doing that fixed things.

Assuming me.
Well, I had several reinstalls since then.. mainly cuz of switching HDD's was quicker with a reinstall then drawing images (and besides software nothing is ever stored on my C)
So yes, did that too ;)
Tried the antivirus bs, all other things etc and non work. In general, by just increasing my graphical load I found a balance to reduce my CPU, HDD and Mobo load to a min of 40 fps in all situations with now maxed settings. I still think it's bs that updates should screw it over that much. On a side note, some settings on network etc from (sung?) members also helped a lot..
In general, Valve fucked up, period, stop, point, exclamation etc.. you get the idea ;)
yea that raising everything to higher settings actually worked really well... I was on the spam server and in specific maps at certain parts where i would drop down to the 40's its now high 60's, which is just fine for me. 60+ is all I ask for lol. And of course in regular parts my fps is more stable too as well, up from 80s to about high 90's, low 100's now.
Thanks for the tip though much appreciated.
