Why you want to replace it? just add a switch somewhere along the line..

5 ports witch; $9.99 on newegg

Because really. Use wired for waht you can (you get better banwidth anyway) and what would be dumb to (like laptops) use the wireless you already have.

so if i get a switch, i can still receive a wireless signal to the router i have now, and then expand on the switch for land lines??

i live in a house thats bigger than 15 by 15 ft like my dorm room, my brother keeps his computer in his room and my parents have 2 wireless computers, so we are running out of space

Get a gigabit switch dude, no point in getting a new router. Take one of the router ports and there should be an 'uplink' port on the switch.

Btw, you can add up to 255 computers on hubs/switches since your router would be your DHCP.

This is what I have, pretty sweet

this is why you use a switch. It works almost exactly like a router, but is more for expanding. Offices and schools use them for their massive network of computers. For a home base it's the same deal. You run an ethernet cable to wherever you need the switch, plug it in--usually--the first etherport and then run other ethernet cables to your various clients.

A diagram might enlighten you of what you could do.

Also a step by step how to: http://www.home-network-help.com/network-switch.html

I also found this site that explains how to turn another router into a switch if you have and old one.

I also looked up from the first site what it meant by crossover cables. In which i found this site http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/about-ethernet-crossover.asp that pretty much says it's not a normal Ethernet cable so you'd have to buy one of these to go with your switch because from what I saw a switch you would buy doesn't come with one (at least not in the less than $30.00 range, there probably some that do come with it.)

here's longest I've seen of those, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812107213 which is only 25ft. may get find longer ones of ebay or tigerdirect.

so a switch is different than a hub correct?

Yes, switch is different from a hub. I'll spare you the technical networking mumbo jumbo. No real reason to know the difference for home networking.

Looks like there aren't that many 8 port wireless routers. Most people probably use a 4 port wireless router and a switch. So, I'll stick with what folks have already said.

Not really sure why you need 8 ports. Get some wireless adapters and go wireless!

Expand, yes they do the same thing just send info a bit differently with a switch being more efficient. But for what you would need it for (setting up your own subnet in your room?) a hub would work just fine if you could find one for cheaper than a switch.

Cosmic..

As explained but not in your language here is the lowdown for your ugly ass:

Your house is violated with some dirty stuff entering.. It disappears into a box, not like a female box this delivers whenever YOU* want, and brings you the Iweb with fancy shit going through a cable.. you need a router thingy to understand stuff and convert it.. Router gives adress to pc's and other stuff in your house either with cable (for gaming) or fancy air stuff like wifi. For wifi you need only things to plug into pc as adapters and stuff, but for cables you only have 4 plugs.. on each plug you can put this magical thing called a switch.. no.. not the terrible song by our fresh prince, a hardware stuff that differs from a hub, no.. no scifi jokes.. need focus!, in means of understanding the magical data that brings you the fancy iweb things, in any it is better and overall faster under load.. Load.. the total magical fancy iweb stuff, not your ass! You can put on any of the 4 holes in the router a switch as it only works as a crossroad and gives more holes.. 1 uplink hole to the router, 4~8~16 holes for new traffic, not made by Ti?sto (as it started on the radio when I typed it LOL). Router is your almighty iweb controller that gives adresses, switches and cables are roads and crossroads to get to your adresses.. You can put as many switches after each other as you want (although not ideal for stuff to bring you fancy iweb stuff).

*To point out, your ISP is very like a woman as it has mood swings, days of being unreachable and sometimes being plain and simple.. not working. However, unlike women whenever you have enough of it all, you can turn off you modem, router, switch and pc and fuck em all!

Now.. stop goofing, buy switch thing for 10 dollars, the stuff you say will become more worth then the euro in 5 years LMFAOWIHABFAFIMRAAMMYAMTTDMRFBNA (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=LMFAOWIHABFAFIMRAAMMYAMTTDMRFBNA)!, and use 1 of the 4 ports of your router to connect it.. Don't ask, guru's have spoken, go wax stuff!
