Does anyone have any experience with the core i5?
I had a wishlist at newegg with the AMD 955 but the i5 750 seems to be a smoking deal for performance.
I'm looking for reasons to stick with AMD and for reasons to switch to Intel.

I have been looking into the whole core i CPU movement pretty intensely lately and the core i5 just basically is the lowest end core i7 running with a 1 step lower multiplier BUT its much cheaper.

so if your not looking for a bunch of power, the i5 works amazingly.
can't wait for the 6core i9 to come out ;) haha
as for intel vs amd...it's still down to personal preference. I've always gone intel based but i've had some friends who have always gone amd based and we've never really been able to outperform one another in frames per second in video games, booting up times, shutting down, running 3d modeling programs, folding@home, or whatever. maybe someone else has some personal stories of using both amd and intel.

From personal experience, I find Intel to be more performance for the money, but there are the hardcore AMD fans who won't acknowledge that =P

I don't believe core i5 can triple channel ram like the i7's. So if you got the cash i'd think the i7 would be better overall and have a longer life expectancy.

As what i have experience i used to have a computer with amd. now i have intel. I really need to convert back to amd actually so I highly recommend that amd 750. It's going to bump that custom computer with all the schematics for great performance.

The amd/intel battle....doesn't seem to exist when it comes to gaming. Until you go with multiple GPU's...then the i7 starts to shine.
I've found that the core i5 is much quicker in other operations like encoding, compression stuff when compared to the AMD 955/965. Usually around a 20% increase....and at the same price. I don't think AMD is an option anymore.
The i7 is so much power right now I couldn't even use it. I think the i5 is perfect for the money. Basically like Brains said, the i5 is an i7 minus hyperthreading, which makes it wayyyy more affordable.

I wish I had two i7's on one board with 16gb ram and RAID 0 SSD's. Thnx.

if u wanna go fast get an e8400 wolfdale and overclock it from 3.0 to 4.0 and get a good cooling fan

The i5 would be a better choice for gaming. Intel really hasn't had competition in high performance sector since the Core 2s came out. i5s might not have hyperthreading or triple-channel memory but those things really do not impact performance in the grand scheme over a clock boost or new video card.
Now if you do plan on Overclocking your i5, be sure to read this article first:

Some people have burned out their motherboards and CPUs due to defects in specific branded mobo sockets.

That's only when using extreme methods like with LN2 or Dry Ice.
A Core i5 build would be very good for whatever you're planning to do. The i5 is the same Nehalem architecture behind the i7, except without Hyperthreading. It's up to you to determine if you need it. Stuff like video encoding, Photoshop, anything that can take advantage of more than 4 cores is a good candidate for an i7 build. If you don't need that, then the i5 is just as good.
But if you have an AM2+ or AM3 setup now, just drop in a new CPU and you're good ot go. No point spending more money than you need to.

I'm running an old Opteron 148 LOL.
Time for an upgrade, especially with borderlands. I had to sacrifice 1080p and drop to 720p to be able to run it.
